Appearance
The Black Angelfish displays a deep, uniform black colouration across the entire body and fins, creating a dramatic, silhouette-like appearance in the aquarium. The tall, laterally compressed body and long, flowing dorsal and anal fins give angelfish their iconic, majestic profile. Against lighter substrates, plants, or tank backgrounds, the Black Angelfish creates a stunning visual contrast that makes it an instant focal point in any aquarium.
Water Parameters & Tank Setup
- Temperature: 75 – 84°F (24 – 29°C)
- pH: 6.0 – 7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 3 – 10 dGH
- Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons for a pair; 55+ gallons for a group
- Substrate: Dark substrate enhances their dramatic black colouration
- Plants & Decor: Tall plants, driftwood, and open swimming space; Amazon-style setups suit them perfectly
Diet & Feeding
- Staple: High-quality flake food, pellets, and angelfish-specific foods
- Treats: Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and small feeder insects
Feed 2–3 times daily. Angelfish are mid-water feeders and will readily accept food at the surface and mid-column.
Compatibility & Tank Mates
Best kept with similarly sized, peaceful fish. Good tank mates include larger tetras (e.g., Black Skirt, Congo), Corydoras, gouramis, and peaceful cichlids. Avoid very small fish that may be eaten, and avoid aggressive fin-nippers like Tiger Barbs.
Breeding
Angelfish are open spawners and breed readily in captivity. Pairs form strong bonds and will spawn on broad plant leaves, flat rocks, or vertical surfaces. Parents guard eggs and fry actively. Eggs hatch in 48–60 hours and fry become free-swimming within a week.
The Black Angelfish is a dramatic and majestic fish that brings bold elegance to any aquarium. A timeless classic in a striking new colour — a perfect centrepiece for any large community tank.
