Vallisneria Rubra

Flowing, graceful, and warmly coloured — Vallisneria rubra is a stunning red-tinged variety of the classic Vallisneria, prized for its long, ribbon-like leaves that sway gently with water movement and develop rich reddish-brown to burgundy hues under good lighting. Appearance

Vallisneria rubra produces long, narrow, ribbon-like leaves that arch gracefully toward the water surface and sway with even gentle currents, creating a dynamic, living curtain effect in the background. Under moderate to high lighting, the leaves develop attractive reddish-brown to burgundy tones along the length of the blade, adding warm colour contrast to green-dominant aquascapes. The plant spreads readily via runners, gradually forming a lush, dense stand.

Planting & Placement

Plant individual runners into substrate, burying the roots while keeping the crown (base of the leaves) at or just above the substrate surface. Space plants 3 – 5 cm apart and allow runners to spread naturally over time. Trim leaves that reach the surface to prevent shading of other plants. Best suited to the background of aquariums of 60 litres or more, where its height can be fully appreciated.

Compatibility

Compatible with virtually all freshwater fish and invertebrates. Particularly valued in community tanks and cichlid setups for its hardiness and ability to withstand moderate disturbance. The dense stand of leaves provides excellent shelter and spawning sites for fish. Avoid using liquid carbon products (glutaraldehyde-based) at high doses, as Vallisneria is sensitive to these compounds.
