Appearance
Vallisneria biwaensis produces exceptionally long, broad, flat ribbon leaves that can exceed 150 cm in length in large tanks, draping gracefully across the water surface and creating a lush, immersive jungle effect. The leaves are a rich, deep green with a slightly translucent quality and fine serration along the edges. The sheer scale of this plant makes it one of the most commanding background specimens available, transforming even a large aquarium into a verdant underwater landscape.
Water Parameters & Care
- Temperature: 59 – 82°F (15 – 28°C) — tolerates cooler water well
- pH: 6.5 – 8.0
- General Hardness (GH): 5 – 20 dGH
- Lighting: Low to high — highly adaptable; grows well even in low light
- CO₂: Not required — thrives without CO₂ injection
- Fertiliser: Benefits from root tabs near the base; avoid high doses of liquid carbon (Excel/glutaraldehyde) which can damage Vallisneria
Planting & Placement
Plant individual runners into substrate, burying the roots while keeping the crown at or just above the substrate surface. Allow ample space between plants — at least 5 – 10 cm — as this species spreads vigorously via runners and can quickly fill a large tank. Trim leaves that fold at the surface to manage growth and prevent excessive shading. Best suited to aquariums of 200 litres or more where its full scale can be appreciated.
Compatibility
Compatible with virtually all freshwater fish and invertebrates. Particularly well-suited to large community tanks, cichlid biotopes, and coldwater setups. The dense canopy of leaves provides exceptional shelter, shade, and spawning sites for fish. Avoid using liquid carbon products (glutaraldehyde-based) at high doses, as Vallisneria is sensitive to these compounds.
Vallisneria biwaensis is the ultimate background plant for large aquariums — fast-growing, low-maintenance, and breathtakingly impressive at full size. Plant it once and let it fill your tank with natural, flowing grandeur.
