The Tiger Hillstream Loach (Sewellia lineolata) is one of the most visually stunning and behaviourally fascinating freshwater fish available in the hobby. Native to the fast-flowing, highly oxygenated hill streams of Vietnam and Laos, this species has evolved a flattened, ray-like body with an intricate tiger-stripe pattern of gold and dark brown — a natural work of art that clings effortlessly to rocks and glass in strong current. A showpiece fish for the well-maintained hillstream or high-flow planted aquarium.

Appearance

The body is broad, flat, and hydrodynamically shaped — perfectly adapted for life in strong current. The dorsal surface is covered in a striking reticulated pattern of golden-yellow and dark brown, resembling tiger stripes or a fine mosaic. Paired pectoral and pelvic fins spread wide like wings, allowing the fish to anchor itself to smooth surfaces with remarkable grip. Truly one of the most unique-looking fish in freshwater fishkeeping.

• Dissolved Oxygen: High — strong surface agitation and flow required
• Flow: Strong current is critical for long-term health

This species is highly sensitive to warm, stagnant, or low-oxygen water. A powerful filter or powerhead creating strong flow is non-negotiable. Not recommended for standard tropical community setups without adequate flow.

Diet & Feeding

• Primary: Biofilm, algae, and aufwuchs grazed from rocks and surfaces
• Supplemental: Algae wafers, blanched zucchini, spinach, and sinking pellets
• Treats: Frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp occasionally

Primarily a grazer — ensure there is sufficient biofilm and algae growth on rocks and hardscape. Supplement regularly with sinking foods.

Compatibility & Tank Mates

• Peaceful with most fish that tolerate strong flow — white cloud mountain minnows, hillstream gobies, danios
• Can be kept in small groups; males may spar but rarely cause injury
• Avoid slow-water species, large cichlids, or aggressive bottom dwellers
• Excellent algae grazer — a functional and beautiful addition to any high-flow setup
