Appearance
The Mbu Puffer has a large, robust body with a beautiful pattern of dark brown to olive reticulated markings on a pale yellow to cream background — a complex, maze-like pattern that covers the entire dorsal surface. Juveniles display particularly vivid colouration that remains striking into adulthood.
Water Parameters & Tank Setup
- Temperature: 75 – 82°F (24 – 28°C)
- pH: 7.0 – 8.0
- General Hardness (GH): 10 – 20 dGH
- Tank Size: Minimum 300 gallons for a single adult — this is not a fish for small aquariums
- Substrate: Sand or fine gravel
- Decor: Large caves, driftwood, and open swimming space; very robust decor only
- Filtration: Extremely powerful filtration required — Mbu Puffers produce enormous amounts of waste
Diet & Feeding
- Staple: Large snails, mussels, clams, crabs, and other hard-shelled invertebrates — essential for beak wear
- Treats: Large shrimp, crayfish, earthworms, and other meaty foods
- Note: Hard foods are absolutely essential to prevent dangerous beak overgrowth
Feed every 2–3 days — do not overfeed.
Compatibility & Tank Mates
Must be kept alone. The Mbu Puffer is aggressive and will attack any tank mate. A dedicated species-only tank is absolutely required.
Behaviour & Intelligence
Mbu Puffers are exceptionally intelligent and interactive fish. They quickly recognize their owners, follow them around the tank, and actively beg for food. Many owners describe the experience of keeping an Mbu Puffer as similar to keeping a large, intelligent pet — a truly unique and rewarding relationship.
The Mbu Puffer is the ultimate freshwater pufferfish — massive, majestic, and magnificently intelligent. A true once-in-a-lifetime fish for the most dedicated and well-equipped aquarists.
