Plant Overview & Origin

Staurogyne repens is a freshwater aquatic plant belonging to the family Acanthaceae . It is native to South America, specifically found in Brazil (particularly the southern Amazonas region) and Guyana . In the wild, it grows as a compact subshrub on riverbanks and on rocks in fast-flowing rivers, thriving in wet, tropical conditions .

 Key Features & Appearance

This plant is highly valued in aquascaping for its unique appearance and growth habit.

  • Growth Form: It has a distinctive compact, low, and bushy stature. Its nearest relative in the aquarium trade is Hygrophila, but S. repens is much more compact .

  • Stems and Leaves: It features stiff, brownish stems with small, fresh green leaves. The leaves are arranged oppositely on the stem and are typically lanceolate or spindle-shaped . Underwater, the leaves are notably smaller and narrower than its emergent (above-water) form . It typically grows to a height of under 10 cm .

  • Creeping Nature: A key characteristic is its ability to produce horizontally creeping shoots from the base of the plant, allowing it to spread and form a dense carpet, which is ideal for the foreground of an aquarium .

 Aquarium Care Guide

Staurogyne repens is considered a hardy plant but does best when its basic needs are met.

Parameter Ideal Condition Details
Light Medium to High High light encourages compact, low growth. Insufficient light may cause it to grow taller and leggy .
CO₂ Recommended (20-30 mg/l) CO2 supplementation is not strictly required but is highly recommended for faster, healthier, and more compact growth .
Temperature 20-28 °C (68-82 °F) It thrives in a wide range of tropical aquarium temperatures .
Water Parameters pH: 6-7.5, Soft to moderately hard It prefers slightly acidic to neutral water. Stable conditions are key .
Substrate & Fertilization Nutrient-rich substrate A nutrient-rich substrate (like aquasoil) is very beneficial. It also requires regular dosing of micronutrients, especially iron, to maintain vibrant green colors .
Growth Rate Slow to Moderate Its manageable growth rate means less frequent trimming compared to many stem plants .

 Planting and Propagation Tips

  • Planting: When planting, divide a potted clump into 2-4 small portions and plant them a few centimeters apart in the substrate. Remove any emergent leaves that may melt underwater. Ensure the roots are anchored but the base of the stem isn't buried too deeply to prevent rot .

  • Propagation: It's very easy to propagate. Simply take stem cuttings (from the top or side shoots) and replant them in the substrate. These cuttings will quickly develop their own root systems .

  • Pruning: Regular trimming of the vertical shoot tips encourages the plant to produce more horizontal shoots and side branches, promoting a bushier and denser carpet .
