Elegant, lush, and wonderfully adaptable — Spathiphyllum wallisii, commonly known as the Peace Lily, is a beautiful tropical plant that can be grown as a marginal or emersed aquatic plant in paludariums, terrariums, and aquarium setups where the leaves are kept above the waterline. With its glossy, deep green leaves and occasional white spathe flowers, it brings a touch of tropical elegance to any aquatic or semi-aquatic display.

Appearance

Spathiphyllum wallisii displays broad, lance-shaped to oval leaves in a rich, glossy deep green with prominent veining. The leaves grow on long, elegant petioles and have a smooth, lustrous surface that catches light beautifully. Under good conditions, the plant produces distinctive white spathe flowers — a single white bract surrounding a pale spadix — that add an additional ornamental quality to the display. The overall plant has a lush, tropical appearance that complements aquatic settings beautifully.

Water Parameters & Care

  • Temperature: 65 – 85°F (18 – 29°C)
  • pH: 5.5 – 7.5
  • Humidity: High humidity preferred — ideal for paludariums and terrariums
  • Lighting: Low to moderate — tolerates low light conditions well
  • CO₂: Not required
  • Fertiliser: Benefits from occasional liquid fertiliser or slow-release fertiliser in substrate

Planting & Placement

Best grown with roots in water or moist substrate and leaves above the waterline in paludarium, terrarium, or aquarium overflow setups. Can also be grown as a houseplant with roots trailing into an aquarium sump or overflow. Note: Spathiphyllum is not a true aquatic plant and should not be fully submerged — the leaves must remain above water.

Compatibility

Safe for use in aquarium setups as a marginal plant. The roots provide excellent biological filtration and hiding spots for fish and invertebrates. Non-toxic to fish when used as a marginal plant with roots in water.

Spathiphyllum wallisii is a beautiful and versatile tropical plant that brings lush, glossy elegance and occasional white flowers to any paludarium or aquarium marginal setup. Easy to grow, adaptable, and always stunning — a wonderful choice for aquarists who want to extend their planted display above the waterline.
