Appearance

The Electric Blue Hap male displays a breathtaking, uniform electric blue to cobalt blue colouration across the entire body and fins — one of the most vivid and saturated blue colours in the freshwater hobby. The intensity of the blue colouration is most spectacular in dominant males, where the entire body appears to glow with an almost neon blue luminosity. Females and juveniles are silver-grey with faint markings. The transformation from juvenile to adult male colouration is one of the most dramatic colour changes in the cichlid world.

Best kept with other Lake Malawi haplochromine cichlids of similar size. Avoid very small fish that may be eaten. Keep one male per tank to prevent aggression.

Breeding

Maternal mouthbrooders. Females incubate eggs in their mouths for 3–4 weeks.
