Scarlet badis - Dario dario

The Scarlet Badis is a stunning, nano-sized fish native to India. Prized for its vibrant colors and personality, it's a favorite among advanced nano-aquarium enthusiasts. However, it has specific care requirements that differ from typical community fish.

Scientific & Common Names

• Scientific Name: Dario dario (formerly known as Badis badis "Scarlet").

• Common Names: Scarlet Badis, Scarlet Gem Badis, Badis "Scarlet".

Natural Habitat

Found in shallow, slow-moving waters like streams, ponds, and rice paddies in the Brahmaputra River basin (India and possibly Bhutan). Their environment typically has:

• Substrate: Sandy or silty, covered with leaf litter.

• Shelter: Dense vegetation, roots, and branches.

• Water: Very clean, clear.

Appearance

• Size: Very small. Males max out at about 0.8 - 1 inch (2-2.5 cm), 

Behavior & Tank Mates

• Temperament: Shy, peaceful but territorial. Males will spar with each other in small spaces.

• Suitable Tank Mates (in larger, well-planned tanks): Very peaceful, tiny, top-dwelling fish like Celestial Pearl Danios or micro rasboras (e.g., Chili Rasbora). Small, non-aggressive shrimp (like Neocaridina) and snails are usually okay.

• Avoid: Any larger, faster, or aggressive fish that will outcompete them for food and cause stress.
