Plant Overview

Pogostemon stellatus 'Dassen' is a breathtaking star-leaved stem plant originating from Southeast Asia and Australia. One of the most visually dramatic plants available to aquascapers, it produces large whorls of narrow, needle-like leaves that radiate outward like a starburst — hence the name stellatus (Latin for "starry"). The 'Dassen' variety is particularly prized for its vivid pink-to-violet coloration under optimal conditions.

Appearance

Each stem is adorned with whorls of 8–12 slender, lance-shaped leaves, creating a feathery, star-like silhouette. Under high light and CO2, the foliage transitions from olive-green at the base to stunning shades of pink, magenta, and violet toward the growing tips. Soft water and iron-rich fertilization are key to unlocking its full chromatic potential.

Care Guide

  • Lighting: High intensity is non-negotiable for vibrant pink and violet colouration. Under low light, the plant will remain green and grow poorly.
  • CO2: Essential. Without CO2 injection, this plant will struggle to thrive and will not display its signature colours.
  • Nutrients: Requires a rich macro and micronutrient regimen. Iron (Fe) and potassium are especially important for colour development. A nutrient-rich substrate is strongly recommended.
  • Water: Prefers soft, slightly acidic water. Hard or alkaline water will inhibit growth and colour expression.
  • Maintenance: Trim regularly to keep growth compact and encourage branching. Replant cuttings to build a lush, multi-stemmed group.

Aquascaping Uses

  • A showstopping midground or background specimen that draws the eye with its starburst leaf whorls and vivid colour.
  • Ideal for Nature Aquarium and Dutch-style layouts where bold colour contrast is desired.
  • Pairs exceptionally well with green carpeting plants and dark hardscape to make the pink tones pop.
  • Plant in groups of 5–9 stems for a dramatic, full display.
