Architectural, vivid, and endlessly eye-catching — Pogostemon erectus is one of the most distinctive stem plants in the aquascaping hobby. Its densely packed whorls of fine, needle-like leaves radiate outward from each stem in a perfect star pattern, creating a striking geometric texture that stands apart from any other aquatic plant. Under high light and CO₂, the foliage glows in rich emerald to teal-green tones, making it an exceptional background and midground specimen.

Appearance
Pogostemon erectus produces dense whorls of extremely fine, needle-like leaves arranged in a perfect radial pattern around each stem node, giving it an almost pine tree or bottlebrush-like silhouette. The colouration is a rich, vibrant emerald to teal-green that intensifies under high lighting and CO₂ injection. Planted in groups, it creates a lush, forest-like backdrop that adds incredible depth and texture to any aquascape.
Water Parameters & Care
- Temperature: 72 – 82°F (22 – 28°C)
- pH: 6.0 – 7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 3 – 15 dGH
- Lighting: High — essential for compact, dense growth and vibrant colouration
- CO₂: Highly recommended — significantly improves growth rate and prevents lower leaf loss
- Fertiliser: Benefits from regular liquid fertiliser and a nutrient-rich substrate
Planting & Placement
Plant stems individually into substrate, spacing 3 – 5 cm apart to allow each stem adequate light and room to develop. Trim regularly from the top to encourage bushy, dense growth and replant healthy cuttings to fill in the background. Without sufficient light and CO₂, lower leaves may drop — ensure good water circulation and consistent fertilisation for best results. Ideal for background planting in aquariums of 60 litres or more.
Compatibility
Compatible with all freshwater fish and invertebrates. Safe for shrimp tanks. Avoid housing with herbivorous fish that may graze on the fine foliage. Pairs beautifully with red stem plants such as Rotala macrandra or Ludwigia repens for a striking green-red contrast, and with carpeting plants like Hemianthus callitrichoides for a layered, nature-style composition.
Pogostemon erectus is a statement plant that transforms any aquascape with its unique geometric form and rich green colour. Rewarding to grow and impossible to overlook — a must-have for serious planted tank enthusiasts.
