Appearance
The Panda Loach displays a striking pattern of bold black and white bands across the body — the panda-like colouration that makes this species immediately recognizable and highly desirable. The streamlined, slightly flattened body and adhesive underside are perfectly adapted for clinging to rocks in fast-flowing currents.
Water Parameters & Tank Setup
- Temperature: 65 – 75°F (18 – 24°C) — cool, well-oxygenated water essential
- pH: 6.5 – 7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 2 – 12 dGH
- Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons for a small group
- Substrate: Smooth river pebbles and sand
- Decor: Rocks, driftwood, and strong water flow to replicate their natural mountain stream habitat; well-oxygenated water is critical
- Filtration: Powerful filtration with strong flow; high oxygen levels essential
Diet & Feeding
- Staple: Biofilm and algae grazing; high-quality sinking wafers and algae-based foods
- Treats: Blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber), frozen daphnia, and baby brine shrimp
- Note: Primarily a grazer — ensure biofilm growth on rocks and surfaces for natural foraging
Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
Compatibility & Tank Mates
Peaceful and social — best kept in groups of 4 or more of their own kind. Suitable tank mates include other cool-water, fast-water species such as hillstream loaches, small danios, and White Cloud Mountain Minnows. Avoid warm-water tropical fish — the Panda Loach requires cooler temperatures than most tropical species.
The Panda Loach is a rare and extraordinary nano fish that brings bold panda patterning and fascinating behaviour to any cool-water aquarium. A true collector’s species for the dedicated and experienced aquarist.
