Small, peaceful, and incredibly hardworking — the Otocinclus Catfish (Otocinclus vitatta), affectionately known as the "Oto," is one of the most popular and effective algae-eating fish in the planted aquarium hobby. These tiny catfish are tireless grazers that keep plant leaves, glass, and decor spotlessly clean, all while being completely peaceful and safe with even the smallest tank inhabitants.

Overview

Attribute Details
Common Name Otocinclus, Oto Catfish, Dwarf Suckermouth Catfish
Scientific Name Otocinclus vitatta
Origin South America (Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina)
Adult Size 1 – 1.5 inches (2.5 – 4 cm)
Lifespan 3 – 5 years
Difficulty Intermediate (sensitive to water quality)
Temperament Completely peaceful; ideal community fish

Appearance

Otocinclus have a slender, torpedo-shaped body with a flattened underside and a small sucker mouth perfectly adapted for rasping algae from surfaces. Their body is silver-grey with a bold dark brown horizontal stripe running from the snout to the tail. Their small size and unobtrusive colouration make them blend naturally into a planted aquascape while they quietly go about their work.

Water Parameters & Tank Setup

  • Temperature: 72 – 79°F (22 – 26°C)
  • pH: 6.0 – 7.5
  • General Hardness (GH): 2 – 15 dGH
  • Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons for a group of 4+
  • Lighting: Moderate — promotes algae growth for grazing
  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel
  • Plants & Decor: Heavily planted tanks are ideal; broad-leaved plants like Anubias and Amazon Swords provide excellent grazing surfaces
  • Important: Otos require a mature, well-established tank with existing algae growth — they do not thrive in new, sterile setups

Diet & Feeding

Otocinclus are primarily herbivorous algae grazers:

  • Primary diet: Soft green algae and biofilm on plant leaves, glass, and decor
  • Supplemental feeding: Algae wafers, blanched zucchini, cucumber, and spinach
  • Important: Supplement their diet regularly — they can starve in tanks with insufficient algae growth

Compatibility & Tank Mates

One of the most peaceful fish available. Perfect tank mates include:

  • Small tetras, rasboras, and nano fish
  • Dwarf shrimp (completely safe — Otos will not harm shrimp)
  • Corydoras catfish
  • Snails
  • Dwarf cichlids

Avoid housing with aggressive fish or large cichlids. Keep in groups of 4 or more — Otos are social and do poorly when kept alone.

Breeding

Otocinclus can be bred in captivity but it requires specific conditions. They are egg depositors, placing eggs on plant leaves. Conditioning with live foods and a water change to simulate the rainy season can trigger spawning. Fry are tiny and require infusoria or liquid fry food initially.

The Otocinclus Catfish is the planted aquarium keeper's best friend — a tireless, gentle algae cleaner that is safe with every tank inhabitant. Add a group to your planted tank and enjoy a cleaner, healthier aquarium with these charming little catfish on the job.
