Appearance

The Deissner’s Licorice Gourami displays a dark, almost black body with vivid iridescent blue-green to turquoise horizontal stripes and fin markings that shimmer brilliantly under aquarium lighting. Males in breeding condition display the most intense colouration — the dark body and vivid iridescent markings create a stunning contrast that makes this tiny fish one of the most beautiful nano fish in the hobby. Females are more subdued in colouration.

• pH: 4.0 – 6.5 (very soft, acidic blackwater conditions essential)
• General Hardness (GH): 0 – 5 dGH (very soft water required)
• Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons for a pair or small group
• Plants & Decor: Heavily planted with Indian almond leaves, driftwood, and leaf litter to replicate blackwater peat swamp conditions; dim lighting preferred

Diet & Feeding

• Staple: Live or frozen micro foods — baby brine shrimp, micro worms, daphnia, and infusoria
• Note: Licorice Gouramis have very small mouths and require appropriately sized micro foods; they may refuse dry foods

Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.

Compatibility & Tank Mates

Best kept in a species-only or carefully chosen blackwater nano tank. Suitable companions include small, peaceful blackwater species such as Chili Rasboras or Ember Tetras. Avoid any boisterous or larger fish.

Breeding

Cave spawners — males guard eggs in small caves or under leaves. Fry are tiny and require infusoria and micro foods.
