Orange & Black Oranda — A Bold and Regal Fancy Goldfish

Few fancy goldfish command attention quite like the Orange & Black Oranda (Carassius auratus). With its striking two-tone colouration and signature fleshy hood (known as the wen) crowning its head, this fish is a true showpiece — regal, graceful, and full of personality.

Picture the deep contrast of rich orange and velvety black gliding through your aquarium, the wen developing more fully with each passing month. Orandas are known for recognizing their owners and often swim to the front of the tank at feeding time — making them as interactive as they are beautiful.

Care at a Glance

  • Common Name: Oranda Goldfish
  • Scientific Name: Carassius auratus
  • Origin: Asia
  • Maximum Size: 9 – 12 inches (23 – 30 cm)
  • pH: 7.0 – 7.4
  • Temperature: 20 – 24°C (68 – 78°F)
  • Temperament: Peaceful and sociable
  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Tank & Setup Tips

Orandas do best in a spacious, well-filtered aquarium of at least 30 gallons for a single fish, with additional space for each tank mate. They are heavy waste producers, so a quality filtration system and regular partial water changes are essential. Avoid sharp decorations that could damage their delicate wen or fins. Smooth river stones, broad-leaf plants, and open swimming space are ideal.

Feeding

Feed moderately with a high-quality sinking pellet or gel food formulated for fancy goldfish. Their rounded body shape makes them susceptible to swim bladder issues from floating foods. Supplement with blanched vegetables (peas, spinach) and occasional frozen treats like bloodworms or daphnia. Feed once or twice daily, only what they can consume in 2–3 minutes.

Compatible Tank Mates

Best kept with other fancy goldfish varieties of similar size and swimming ability. Avoid fast, fin-nipping species or slim-bodied goldfish that may outcompete them for food.
