A Sleek, Glossy Algae-Eating Powerhouse

The Black Helmet Snail (Neritina pulligera) is one of the most striking and effective nerite snails available for freshwater aquariums. Named for its smooth, glossy, jet-black shell that resembles a polished helmet, this species from the streams and rivers of Southeast Asia is both a visual standout and a tireless algae grazer. Hardy, peaceful, and escape-resistant compared to many snails, the Black Helmet Nerite is an excellent choice for planted tanks, shrimp tanks, and community aquariums alike.

Why the Black Helmet Nerite?

  • Highly effective grazer of green spot algae, film algae, and diatoms on glass, rocks, and decor
  • Will not reproduce in freshwater — no risk of snail population explosions in your tank
  • Completely plant-safe — will not damage or consume aquatic plants
  • Safe with all shrimp species, including delicate Caridina and Neocaridina
  • Striking glossy black shell adds a bold, elegant aesthetic to any aquascape

Water Parameters & Tank Setup

  • Temperature: 20 – 26°C (68 – 78.8°F)
  • pH: 6.5 – 8.0
  • General Hardness (GH): 6 – 18 dGH (moderate hardness supports healthy shell growth)
  • Tank Size: Suitable for tanks from 20 L upward
  • Substrate: Any; will graze on all hard surfaces including glass, rocks, driftwood, and equipment
  • Cover: A lid or lowered water line is recommended — nerites are known to climb out of open tanks

Diet & Feeding

  • Primary: Algae grazing — continuously grazes on tank surfaces throughout the day
  • Supplement: Blanched zucchini, cucumber, and algae wafers when tank algae is limited
  • Calcium: Ensure adequate mineral content in the water to support healthy shell development; cuttlebone can be added as a calcium supplement

Compatibility

  • Peaceful with all community fish, nano fish, and dwarf shrimp
  • Will not harm fish eggs or fry
  • Avoid keeping with snail-eating species such as pufferfish, large cichlids, or assassin snails

Breeding Note

Nerite snails require brackish or saltwater conditions to breed — they will not reproduce in a freshwater aquarium. You may notice small white eggs deposited on hard surfaces, but these will not hatch in freshwater. This makes them one of the few snails that can be kept without concern for population control.

The Black Helmet Snail is a sleek, low-maintenance, and highly effective addition to any freshwater aquarium — beautiful to look at and endlessly useful to keep.
