Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) — The Timeless Classic of the Planted Aquarium

The Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is arguably the most iconic freshwater aquarium fish in the world. With its electric blue stripe running the length of its body and a vivid red tail section that glows under aquarium lighting, the Neon Tetra has captivated aquarists for generations. Despite being a staple of the hobby, it remains one of the most visually stunning schooling fish available — and in a large, well-planted aquarium, a school of Neons is nothing short of breathtaking.

A Living Jewel in Every Aquascape

The Neon Tetra’s iridescent blue and red colouration is produced by light-reflecting cells called iridophores, which shift and shimmer as the fish moves — creating a dynamic, almost luminous effect that no photograph fully captures. In a Nature Aquarium or planted tank with dark substrate and lush green planting, a school of 20 or more Neon Tetras creates one of the most spectacular displays in the freshwater hobby.

Care Profile

  • Scientific Name: Paracheirodon innesi
  • Origin: South America (upper Amazon, Peru, Colombia, Brazil)
  • Size: Up to 3–4 cm
  • Temperament: Peaceful; best kept in schools of 10 or more
  • Diet: Omnivore — accepts flake food, micro pellets, frozen daphnia, and baby brine shrimp
  • Water Temperature: 20–26°C (prefers cooler, soft water)
  • pH: 5.5–7.0 (thrives in soft, slightly acidic water)
  • Tank Size: Minimum 60 cm / 60L for a proper school
  • Note: Avoid keeping with large or aggressive fish — their small size makes them vulnerable to fin-nipping species

Aquascape Compatibility

Completely plant-safe and peaceful with all small community fish, shrimp, and nano species. Neon Tetras are a natural fit for Nature Aquarium layouts, Iwagumi compositions, and South American biotope setups. Their colouration is most vivid in soft, slightly acidic water with subdued lighting and dark substrates. Pair with Corydoras, dwarf cichlids, and other peaceful South American species for a harmonious community.

Electric blue, timeless, and endlessly beautiful — the Neon Tetra is the fish that started it all, and it still reigns supreme.
