Black Emperor Tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri var.) — Dark Elegance for the Planted Aquarium
The Black Emperor Tetra is a striking melanistic variant of the classic Emperor Tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri), native to the rivers of Colombia. Where the standard Emperor Tetra displays iridescent blue and gold tones, the Black Emperor presents a dramatically darker palette — deep charcoal to near-black body colouration with vivid blue eyes and the characteristic trident-shaped tail that defines the Nematobrycon genus. The result is a fish of rare, moody elegance that stands apart in any planted aquarium.
Regal Presence, Peaceful Nature
Despite its dark, commanding appearance, the Black Emperor Tetra is a peaceful and relatively undemanding fish. Males are particularly impressive, developing deeper colouration, more elaborate finnage, and a more pronounced trident tail as they mature. They display mild territorial behaviour toward other males of the same species, but remain peaceful with all other tankmates — making them an excellent centrepiece fish for a community planted aquarium.

Aquascape Compatibility
Completely plant-safe and peaceful with all community fish. The Black Emperor Tetra’s dark colouration creates a striking contrast against bright green planting, light-coloured substrates, and natural hardscape. Their vivid blue eyes are particularly eye-catching under quality aquarium lighting. An excellent choice for Nature Aquarium layouts, Colombian biotope setups, and any planted tank that benefits from a bold, dark accent fish.
Dark, regal, and unmistakably striking — the Black Emperor Tetra commands attention in every aquascape it inhabits.
