Bold, fiery, and unmistakably striking — Myriophyllum tuberculatum is one of the most vivid red stem plants available in the aquascaping hobby. Its fine, feathery whorls of deep crimson to brick-red foliage create an intense splash of colour that commands attention in any planted aquarium. Fast-growing and rewarding under the right conditions, it is a favourite for adding dramatic contrast and vertical interest to the midground and background.

Appearance

Myriophyllum tuberculatum produces delicate, finely pinnate leaves arranged in dense whorls around each stem, giving it a feathery, almost coral-like texture. The colouration ranges from deep brick-red to vivid crimson, intensifying under high light and CO₂. The contrast between its fine red foliage and green foreground plants is one of the most dramatic effects achievable in a planted aquascape.

Water Parameters & Care

  • Temperature: 72 – 82°F (22 – 28°C)
  • pH: 5.5 – 7.0
  • General Hardness (GH): 2 – 12 dGH
  • Lighting: High — essential for deep red colouration and compact growth
  • CO₂: Highly recommended — significantly enhances colour intensity and growth rate
  • Fertiliser: Benefits from regular liquid fertiliser, especially iron and micronutrients, to maintain vibrant red colouration

Planting & Placement

Plant stems individually into substrate, spacing 3 – 5 cm apart to allow light to reach lower leaves. Trim regularly from the top to encourage bushy, dense growth and prevent the lower stems from becoming bare. Replant healthy cuttings to fill in gaps. Best suited to midground and background positions in aquariums of 40 litres or more.

Compatibility

Compatible with most freshwater fish and invertebrates. Safe for shrimp tanks. Avoid housing with herbivorous fish such as goldfish or large cichlids that may graze on the delicate foliage. Pairs exceptionally well with green carpeting plants like Hemianthus callitrichoides or Eleocharis, and with contrasting stem plants like Rotala rotundifolia or Ludwigia species.

Myriophyllum tuberculatum is a showstopper in any planted aquarium. Fast-growing, intensely coloured, and endlessly rewarding — an essential red stem plant for aquascapers who want maximum visual impact.
