Microsorum pteropus - Java fern (Large)

Microsorum pteropus — commonly known as Java Fern — is one of the most iconic and beginner-friendly aquatic plants in the hobby. This Large specimen offers an immediate, lush impact in any aquascape.

Overview

Java Fern is a slow-growing epiphyte native to Southeast Asia, prized for its hardiness, adaptability, and distinctive broad, leathery fronds. Unlike most aquatic plants, it thrives without CO₂ injection or high-intensity lighting, making it ideal for low-tech and community aquariums alike.

• Growth Type: Epiphyte — attach to driftwood, rocks, or hardscape; do not bury the rhizome in substrate

Aquascape Use

Best used as a midground to background statement plant. Attach to driftwood or lava rock with thread or aquarium-safe glue — the rhizome will anchor naturally over time. Its bold, structured fronds contrast beautifully with fine-leaved plants and create natural shelter for fish and shrimp.

Care Notes

Yellowing or transparent leaves are typically caused by excessive light or nutrient deficiency — reduce light intensity and dose with a balanced liquid fertilizer. New plantlets (adventitious buds) will form on mature fronds and can be separated once they develop several roots.

Sold as a single large plant. Live plant — minor variations in size and appearance are natural.
