Vibrant Colour, Lively Character

The Melon Barb (Haludaria fasciata, formerly Puntius fasciatus) is a strikingly colourful and active schooling fish native to the fast-flowing rivers and streams of South and Southeast Asia. Males display a vivid combination of red, orange, and yellow tones with bold dark vertical bars — resembling the warm hues of a ripe melon. Hardy, energetic, and easy to keep, the Melon Barb is an excellent choice for community aquariums with similarly active tankmates.

Overview

Attribute Details
Common Name Melon Barb
Scientific Name Haludaria fasciata
Origin South & Southeast Asia (India, Sri Lanka)
Adult Size Up to 8 cm (3 in)
Lifespan 4 – 6 years
Difficulty Beginner – Easy
Temperament Active; peaceful in groups but may nip fins

Appearance

Males are the showstoppers — their bodies glow with warm orange-red and yellow tones, accented by 4–5 bold dark vertical bars along the flanks. Females are more subdued in colouration but share the same attractive barred pattern. Colouration intensifies in well-maintained water with a varied diet and good lighting.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 20 – 26°C (68 – 79°F)
  • pH: 6.5 – 7.5
  • General Hardness (GH): 5 – 15
  • Water Flow: Moderate to strong — appreciates good oxygenation

Diet & Feeding

  • Staple: High-quality flake food or small pellets
  • Treats: Bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, blanched vegetables

Omnivorous and unfussy. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily. A varied diet enhances the vivid red and orange colouration in males.

Compatibility & Tank Mates

  • Best kept in groups of 6 or more to distribute energy and reduce fin-nipping
  • Good tankmates: other barbs, larger tetras, danios, loaches, and rainbowfish
  • Avoid long-finned or slow-moving fish — Melon Barbs may nip at flowing fins
  • A spacious tank with open swimming areas and some planted zones is ideal
