Subwassertang — Lomariopsis lineata

Distinctive, versatile, and effortlessly low-maintenance — Subwassertang is a fascinating aquatic liverwort that stands apart from typical aquarium mosses. Its flat, irregularly lobed fronds form dense, lush clumps with a texture unlike anything else in the planted tank hobby. Whether left to float freely, tied to hardscape, or used to create a soft foreground carpet, Subwassertang adapts beautifully to a wide range of aquascape styles.

Care & Placement

Subwassertang is one of the most adaptable aquatic plants available. It thrives in a wide range of water conditions and requires minimal intervention to grow well.

  • Floating: Can be left to float freely at the surface, providing excellent cover and shade for shrimp and fry
  • Attached: Tie or glue to rocks, driftwood, or mesh for a lush, textured hardscape effect
  • Carpet: Spread across substrate or mesh panels to create a soft, irregular foreground carpet
  • Trimming: Trim periodically to prevent overgrowth and maintain shape
  • Fertilisation: Low demand; benefits from occasional liquid micronutrient dosing
  • CO₂: Not essential, but improves growth rate and vibrancy

Aquascape & Shrimp Tank Use

Subwassertang is a favourite in shrimp tanks and nano aquascapes. Its dense, irregular fronds provide excellent grazing surfaces for biofilm — a natural food source for shrimp and small invertebrates. The clumping growth habit also offers ideal shelter for shrimplets and fry. A highly recommended addition to any low-tech planted setup.
