Plant Profile & Key Facts

Limnophila aromatica "Mini" is a charming dwarf variety of the common Limnophila aromatica. It's scientifically recognized as a compact form, sometimes referred to by its old trade names, Limnophila sp. "Mini" or Limnophila sp. "Kalimantan Mini". This suggests its origins may trace back to Kalimantan (Borneo). It's a true gem for aquascapers.

Here's a quick overview of its key characteristics:

Feature Details
Common Name Limnophila aromatica "Mini", Mini Limnophila, Kalimantan Mini

 Physical Appearance

This plant is prized for its delicate beauty and the striking contrast in its leaves:

  • Leaves: The submerged leaves are narrow, serrated, and grow in whorls of 2-6 around the stem. They are typically 1-2.5 cm long, but can grow larger (3-5 cm) under optimal conditions. A distinctive feature is the tiny, silvery spots on the leaves, which are actually stomata (pores for gas exchange).

  • Color: Under high light, the tops of the leaves develop stunning shades of brown-red to purple, while the leaf midribs and stems often remain a contrasting light green. Under moderate light, the leaves will stay light green. Some growers also report seeing reddish-orange hues on the top leaves.

  • Scent: Like its larger cousin, the plant has aromatic leaves and can produce a pleasant, subtle scent, especially when grown emerged (above water).

 Care Requirements

To bring out the best colors and compact growth in this plant, it needs specific care:

  • Lighting: High lighting is required for vibrant red and purple hues. With only moderate light, the plant will survive but remain a light green color.

  • CO2: Essential for optimal growth and color. While it might survive without it, CO2 supplementation is highly recommended to see this plant thrive.

  • Nutrients: It needs a complete supply of macro and micronutrients. Iron (Fe) supplementation is particularly important for maintaining intense coloration. A nutrient-rich substrate is also beneficial.

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22-28°C (72-82°F).

    • pH: 5.5-7.5.

    • General Hardness: 0-30 dGH. It prefers softer water for best results.

 Aquascaping Uses

Due to its compact size, this plant is incredibly versatile:

  • It's an excellent choice for creating a bush of color in the midground or foreground of larger aquariums.

  • It is particularly well-suited for nano tanks where standard background plants would be too large.

  • Its upright growth and vibrant color make it a great candidate for creating "plant streets" in a Dutch-style aquascape.

  • To achieve a dense, bushy look, plant several stems in a group with a little space between them and trim regularly to encourage branching.
