Lemon Yellow Lab (Labidochromis caeruleus)

Bright, cheerful, and wonderfully hardy — the Lemon Yellow Lab (Labidochromis caeruleus), also known as the Electric Yellow Cichlid or Yellow Lab, is one of the most popular and beloved Lake Malawi Mbuna cichlids. With its vivid, uniform lemon-yellow colouration and relatively peaceful temperament for an Mbuna, the Yellow Lab is an ideal choice for both beginner and experienced African cichlid keepers.

Appearance

The Lemon Yellow Lab displays a vivid, uniform lemon-yellow to bright yellow colouration across the entire body, with a distinctive black dorsal fin stripe and black pelvic fins that create a bold contrast against the vivid yellow body. The clean, bright yellow colouration is consistent in both males and females, making this one of the few Mbuna species where sexing by colour alone is difficult. Under aquarium lighting, the vivid yellow body glows brilliantly.

Feed 2–3 times daily.

Compatibility & Tank Mates

One of the most peaceful and community-friendly Mbuna species. Excellent tank mates include other Lake Malawi Mbuna and Peacock cichlids. Keep in groups with multiple females per male.

Breeding

Maternal mouthbrooders. Females incubate eggs in their mouths for 3–4 weeks.
