Kennyi Mbuna

Bold, active, and strikingly coloured — the Kennyi Mbuna (Metriaclima lombardoi), also known as the Lombardoi Cichlid or Kenyi Cichlid, is one of the most distinctive and popular Lake Malawi Mbuna cichlids. Unique among Mbuna, the Kennyi displays a remarkable reverse sexual dimorphism — females are vivid blue while males turn bright yellow as they mature, making this one of the most visually interesting cichlids in the hobby.

Appearance

The Kennyi Mbuna displays a remarkable reverse sexual dimorphism — juveniles and females are vivid blue with dark vertical barring, while males gradually transition to a bright yellow to golden-yellow colouration as they mature. This colour reversal is unique among Mbuna and makes the Kennyi one of the most visually interesting cichlids in the hobby. Dominant males display the most intense yellow colouration, while subordinate males may retain some blue colouration.

Diet & Feeding

• Staple: High-quality cichlid pellets and spirulina-based foods
• Treats: Frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and blanched vegetables
• Note: Primarily herbivorous — avoid high-protein meaty foods to prevent Malawi Bloat

Feed 2–3 times daily.

Compatibility & Tank Mates

Best kept in a Lake Malawi Mbuna community with robust, similarly sized species. Due to their aggression, keep in larger groups with multiple females per male to spread aggression. Avoid mixing with very peaceful species.

Breeding

Maternal mouthbrooders. Females incubate eggs in their mouths for 3–4 weeks.
