Botanical & General Information

  • Scientific Name: Hygrophila ringens (L.) R.Br. ex Spreng.

  • Family: Acanthaceae

  • Common Names: Pink Lady (aquarium trade), Water Wisteria (sometimes confused), and various local names like Keremak (Malaysia) or Toiting (Thailand) .

  • Native Range: It has a wide native distribution across Tropical and Subtropical Asia, including countries like India, China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam .

  • Growth Habit in Nature: In its natural habitat, it is an erect or ascending annual or short-lived herbaceous plant, typically growing near swamps, streams, and other wet, periodically humid locations from sea level up to 1000 m altitude . It can grow up to 90-120 cm tall .

✨ Physical Characteristics (Morphology)

  • Leaves: The leaves are simple, arranged oppositely on the stem, and are generally lance-shaped (linear-oblong to elliptical). Their size can vary greatly, from 1-16 cm long and 0.5-5 cm wide . The margin (edge) of the leaf can be entire, slightly wavy (undulate), or finely scalloped (crenulate) .

    • The "Pink Lady" Trait: In its aquarium form, the leaves are the main attraction. Under high lighting, the leaves can develop vibrant pinkish hues, which is why it's called "Pink Lady" .

  • Stem: The stem is subquadrangular (somewhat four-angled) and can root at the lower nodes .

  • Flowers: The flowers are small and grow in dense clusters in the leaf axils (where the leaf meets the stem). They are typically a pale violet-blue or whitish color and are two-lipped, a characteristic of the Acanthus family .

  • Fruit & Seeds: The fruit is a linear-oblong capsule, about 1-2 cm long, containing multiple small (approx. 1.5mm), hairy seeds .

🌱 Cultivation and Care (As an Aquarium Plant)

This is where the "Pink Lady" variety gets its name. It's important to note that the vibrant pink coloration is a response to its environment in a controlled aquarium setting .

Aspect Requirement & Tips
Lighting Medium to High. High light is crucial for developing and maintaining the intense pink color in the leaves .
Temperature 22–28°C . It may stop growing if the temperature drops below 22°C .
Water pH 6.0–7.5 . It can tolerate a range of 5–8.5, but 7–8 is optimal .
Water Hardness Tolerates a wide range (2–18°dKH), but leaves hold up better in medium hardness .
CO₂ & Nutrients CO₂ supplementation is highly beneficial for vibrant colors and optimal growth. Regular fertilization with micronutrients is also recommended .
Placement Midground to Background, as it can grow to a height of 20-50 cm .
Substrate A nutrient-rich substrate is important for its well-developed root system .
Growth Rate Medium to Fast. Regular pruning is necessary to maintain its shape and prevent overgrowth .
Propagation Easily propagated by taking stem cuttings (at least 10-12 cm long with 4-5 leaf whorls) and replanting them into the substrate .

In summary, Hygrophila ringens "Pink Lady" is a versatile and attractive plant. In the wild, it's a robust wetland herb with medicinal properties, while in the aquarium, it's a stunning, colorful stem plant that rewards attentive care with brilliant pink foliage.
