Lifespan 8 – 12 years

Appearance

The Honeycomb Bristlenose displays a striking pattern of pale cream to white spots and reticulated lines arranged in a honeycomb-like network across a dark brown to black body — a bold, graphic pattern that makes this variety immediately distinctive. Males develop the characteristic bristle-like tentacles on the snout that give Bristlenose plecos their name, which are most prominent in dominant males. The armoured, flattened body and sucker mouth are perfectly adapted for clinging to surfaces and grazing algae.

Water Parameters & Tank Setup

  • Temperature: 72 – 82°F (22 – 28°C)
  • pH: 6.0 – 7.5
  • General Hardness (GH): 2 – 15 dGH
  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons
  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel
  • Decor: Driftwood (essential — they rasp on wood as part of their diet), caves and hiding spots, planted tanks
  • Filtration: Good filtration with moderate flow; well-oxygenated water preferred

Diet & Feeding

  • Staple: Algae wafers, sinking pellets, and biofilm grazing
  • Treats: Blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach, and sweet potato; driftwood for rasping
  • Note: Primarily herbivorous — driftwood is an important dietary supplement and should always be available

Feed in the evening as they are most active at night.

Compatibility & Tank Mates

One of the most peaceful and community-friendly plecos available. Excellent tank mates include tetras, rasboras, corydoras, livebearers, and most community fish. Males can be territorial with each other — keep one male per tank unless the aquarium is large with multiple hiding spots. An outstanding algae controller for planted and community tanks.

Breeding

Cave spawners. Males guard eggs in caves or hollow driftwood. Eggs hatch in 4–7 days and the male continues to guard the fry until they are free-swimming. One of the easier plecos to breed in captivity.

The Honeycomb Bristlenose Pleco is a beautiful, hardy, and endlessly useful fish that brings striking patterning, algae control, and peaceful personality to any freshwater aquarium. A premium variant of a classic favourite.
