Hedyotis salzmannii is a lesser-known but truly captivating stem plant that has been quietly gaining recognition among serious aquascapers. Native to tropical regions of the Americas, it produces small, delicate leaves in a rich blue-green to violet hue — a colour rarely seen in aquatic plants — giving it an almost ethereal quality under aquarium lighting.

Its fine, compact growth habit makes it exceptionally versatile: use it as a detailed foreground accent, a textured midground filler, or a soft transition element between bolder plants. Under good lighting, the subtle violet tones intensify, rewarding attentive aquascapers with a plant that looks different — and better — the closer you look.

Appearance

• Height: 5 – 15 cm (2 – 6 inches); suitable for foreground to midground placement
• Leaves: Small, ovate to elliptic; blue-green to violet, with a soft, almost iridescent quality under light
• Growth habit: Upright stem plant; branches readily for a dense, bushy appearance
