A Jewel of the Blackwater Aquarium

The Green Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon simulans) is a delicate, luminous schooling fish closely related to the classic Neon Tetra — but with a longer, more vivid turquoise-green iridescent stripe that runs the full length of its slender body. Subtler and more refined than its famous cousin, the Green Neon is a favourite among biotope aquascapers and planted tank enthusiasts who appreciate understated elegance.

Appearance

The Green Neon Tetra displays a brilliant blue-green iridescent stripe extending from the snout to the tail — longer and more vivid than the standard Neon Tetra. The red patch is reduced or absent, giving the fish a cleaner, more electric look. In a dimly lit blackwater setup with dark substrate, a school of Green Neons creates a mesmerizing, glowing effect.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 22 – 28°C (71.6 – 82.4°F)
  • pH: 6.5 – 7.2
  • General Hardness (GH): 3 – 10

Prefers soft, slightly acidic water. Thrives in blackwater setups with tannins from driftwood or Indian almond leaves.

  • Excellent tankmate for small shrimp species in a planted setup
  • Avoid large or aggressive fish that may prey on them
