A Rare & Textured Freshwater Mussel with Striking Green Colouration

The Green Crispata Mussel (Scabies crispata) is a rare and visually distinctive freshwater bivalve from Southeast Asia, prized among invertebrate enthusiasts for its beautifully textured, ridged shell and rich green colouration. Like all freshwater mussels, it is a passive filter feeder that continuously draws water through its body, removing suspended algae, bacteria, and fine organic particles — making it both a fascinating display animal and a natural water clarifier.

A genuinely uncommon species that stands out from the more commonly available freshwater clams and mussels — a collector’s invertebrate with real functional value.

Overview

Attribute Details
Common Name Green Crispata Mussel
Scientific Name Scabies crispata
Origin Southeast Asia
Difficulty Intermediate — requires consistent suspended food in the water column
Temperament Completely peaceful; passive filter feeder

How It Works

  • Draws water through its body continuously, filtering out suspended algae, bacteria, and fine organic particles
  • Effective at reducing green water caused by free-floating algae blooms
  • Works passively — no active maintenance required beyond ensuring adequate food in the water column
  • Most effective in tanks with moderate flow to deliver suspended particles to the mussel

Important Care Notes

Freshwater mussels require a consistent supply of microscopic food in the water column to survive long-term. They are best suited to tanks that are not overly sterile — a tank with some organic matter, phytoplankton, or mild green water provides ideal conditions. In very clean, heavily filtered tanks, supplemental feeding with liquid invertebrate food or phytoplankton is essential.

  • Bury partially in sand or fine substrate — they naturally anchor and position themselves in soft substrate
  • Ensure moderate water flow to deliver suspended food particles to the mussel
  • Check regularly — a mussel that remains open and unresponsive may have died; remove immediately to prevent ammonia spikes and water quality crashes
  • Highly sensitive to copper-based medications — remove from tank before any copper treatments

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 20 – 28°C (68 – 82°F)
  • pH: 6.5 – 8.0
  • General Hardness (GH): 5 – 15 dGH
  • Flow: Moderate — essential for filter feeding

Compatibility

  • Completely peaceful with all fish, shrimp, and snails
  • Avoid keeping with invertebrate-eating species such as pufferfish or large cichlids
  • Never use copper-based medications while mussels are present in the tank

The Green Crispata Mussel is a rare, beautiful, and genuinely useful freshwater invertebrate — a quiet, hardworking filter feeder that brings both natural elegance and functional water clarity to any aquarium.
