Golden Barbatus Cory (Scleromystax barbatus) — A Rare and Striking Corydoras Relative

The Golden Barbatus Cory (Scleromystax barbatus) is a large, impressive, and rarely seen catfish from the cool coastal rivers of southeastern Brazil. Formerly classified within the Corydoras genus, it now belongs to the closely related Scleromystax genus — and it stands apart from typical Corydoras in both size and character. Males develop striking golden-yellow facial markings and a more robust, armoured body, making this one of the most visually dramatic bottom dwellers available in the hobby.

A Collector’s Catfish with Personality

The Golden Barbatus Cory is not a fish you see every day. Its larger size, distinctive colouration, and active, inquisitive behaviour make it a centrepiece bottom dweller rather than just a background cleaner. Males are particularly impressive, developing bristle-like odontodes on their cheeks and snout that give them a rugged, characterful appearance unlike any standard Corydoras.
