Longfin German Balloon Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) — The Ultimate Ornamental Dwarf Cichlid
The Longfin German Balloon Ram is a breathtaking triple-trait variant of the beloved German Blue Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi), combining the vivid iridescent blue and yellow colouration of the German Blue strain, the compact rounded body of the Balloon form, and the dramatically extended flowing fins of the Longfin variety. The result is one of the most ornate and visually spectacular dwarf cichlids available in the hobby — a living work of art for the planted aquarium.
Three Traits, One Extraordinary Fish
Each element of this fish’s appearance contributes to its overall impact. The German Blue colouration delivers a mosaic of electric blue scales, vivid yellow flanks, and a bold black spot on the body. The balloon body form gives it a plump, jewel-like silhouette. And the longfin trait extends the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins into flowing, veil-like extensions that trail gracefully through the water — making every movement a display of elegance.
Care Profile
- Scientific Name: Mikrogeophagus ramirezi (Longfin German Balloon variant)
- Origin: Selectively bred (wild type from Orinoco and Meta river basins, Venezuela/Colombia)
- Size: Up to 4–5 cm body length; fins extend significantly beyond
- Temperament: Peaceful; may show mild territorial behaviour when breeding — suitable for community tanks with small, non-aggressive fish
- Diet: Omnivore — high-quality micro pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and baby brine shrimp
- Water Temperature: 26–30°C (warm water is critical for health and longevity)
- pH: 5.5–7.0 (prefers soft, acidic water)
- Tank Size: Minimum 60 cm / 60L; pairs benefit from more space
- Note: Longfin variants are more delicate — avoid fin-nipping tankmates and ensure pristine water quality
Aquascape Compatibility
Plant-safe and peaceful with small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and other gentle community fish. Longfin German Balloon Rams are best showcased in heavily planted aquariums with open sandy areas, driftwood for shelter, and warm, soft, well-filtered water. Their flowing fins are best appreciated in low-flow setups where the fins can trail freely without being pushed by strong currents. Avoid any fin-nipping species.
Flowing fins, jewel-like body, electric colour — the Longfin German Balloon Ram is the pinnacle of ornamental dwarf cichlid breeding.
