Appearance
Fissidens fontanus produces delicate, pinnate fronds with pairs of flat, overlapping leaflets arranged along each stem — giving it a soft, feathered appearance reminiscent of a miniature fern. The colouration is a rich, medium to deep green that remains vibrant across a wide range of lighting conditions. When attached to driftwood or rocks, it drapes and spreads naturally over time, creating a lush, aged, forest-floor aesthetic that is deeply sought after in nature aquascaping. Unlike many mosses, its structured frond form retains its shape even in moderate flow.
Water Parameters & Care
- Temperature: 64 – 78°F (18 – 25°C) — prefers cooler water
- pH: 6.5 – 7.2
- General Hardness (GH): 3 – 10 dGH
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): 1 – 2 dKH
- TDS: 100 – 300 ppm
- Lighting: Low to moderate — thrives in low light; moderate light promotes denser growth
- CO₂: Not required, but beneficial for improved growth rate and density
- Fertiliser: Benefits from regular liquid micronutrients
Planting & Placement
Attach portions of Phoenix Moss to driftwood, rocks, or mesh using fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe glue. It will anchor itself naturally as it grows, eventually covering the surface in a lush, flowing mat. Good water circulation around the moss encourages healthy growth and prevents debris accumulation. Can also be allowed to grow freely as a floating mass or anchored to the substrate as a foreground accent.
Compatibility
Compatible with all freshwater fish and invertebrates. Highly valued in shrimp tanks, where the dense fronds provide excellent foraging habitat, shelter, and biofilm growth for neocaridina and caridina shrimp. Avoid housing with large herbivorous or boisterous fish that may uproot or consume the moss. Pairs beautifully with Anubias, Bucephalandra, Fissidens nobilis, and fine-leaved stem plants for a rich, layered aquascape.
Fissidens fontanus (Phoenix Moss) is a classic, versatile, and enduringly beautiful moss that elevates any aquascape with its natural elegance. Easy to keep, rewarding to grow, and stunning at maturity — a staple for any serious planted tank.
