Electric Blue Balloon Ram — A Jewel of the South American Dwarf Cichlid World
Compact, vivid, and endlessly charming, the Electric Blue Balloon Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is one of the most visually stunning dwarf cichlids available in the hobby. A selectively bred variant of the beloved German Blue Ram, the Electric Blue Balloon Ram combines an intensely saturated electric blue body with a rounded, balloon-shaped profile — creating a fish that looks almost too beautiful to be real.
Despite their exotic appearance, these little cichlids are full of personality — curious, interactive, and surprisingly bold for their size. They’ll quickly learn to recognize their keeper and add a splash of iridescent colour to any warm, planted aquarium.

Tank & Setup Tips
Electric Blue Balloon Rams thrive in warm, soft, and well-filtered water — temperature stability is critical for their health and immune function. A minimum 20-gallon tank is recommended, aquascaped with fine sand substrate, driftwood, smooth rocks, and dense planting to provide shelter and territory boundaries.
Dim lighting and tannin-stained water (from Indian almond leaves or driftwood) will bring out their electric blue colouration at its most vivid. They are sensitive to poor water quality and sudden parameter swings, so consistent maintenance is key.
Feeding
Omnivorous and generally eager to eat. Accept high-quality micro pellets, crushed flakes, and frozen or live foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and micro worms. A varied diet enhances colour and vitality. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
Compatible Tank Mates
Best paired with small, peaceful community fish that share their warm water requirements. Ideal tank mates include small tetras (cardinal, rummy nose), corydoras, small rasboras, and dwarf gouramis. Avoid aggressive species, large cichlids, or boisterous fish that may stress them.
Breeding
Pairs form strong bonds and are open substrate spawners, laying eggs on flat rocks or broad leaves. Both parents actively guard the eggs and fry — a fascinating behaviour to observe in a well-set-up aquarium.
