Echinodorus schlueteri — The Understated Elegance of the Sword Family

Echinodorus schlueteri is a medium-sized sword plant from South America that brings a quiet, refined beauty to the planted aquarium. Its elongated, lance-shaped leaves are a rich, deep green — clean, classic, and unfussy — making it an excellent choice for aquascapers who want a dependable, natural-looking background or midground anchor without the drama of heavily variegated cultivars.

Hardy and adaptable, E. schlueteri settles in quickly and grows steadily, rewarding patient aquascapers with a full, lush rosette that provides excellent shelter for fish and shrimp. Its moderate size makes it suitable for a wider range of tank sizes than many of its larger sword relatives.

Appearance

  • Height: 20 – 40 cm (8 – 16 inches); ideal for midground in larger tanks or background in medium tanks
  • Leaves: Elongated, lance-shaped, deep green; smooth-edged with a clean, classic sword plant silhouette
  • Growth habit: Rosette form; moderate growth rate; spreads via runners and flower stalks over time

Care & Planting Tips

  • Position in the midground or background where its full rosette can be appreciated
  • Root feeder — plant in a nutrient-rich substrate or supplement with root tabs
  • Moderate lighting is sufficient; higher light encourages faster, more compact growth
  • CO₂ is beneficial but not required — grows well in low-tech setups
  • Propagates via plantlets on long runners or flower stalks — separate once they have established roots

Ideal Tank Parameters

  • pH: 6.5 – 7.5
  • Temperature: 22 – 28°C (72 – 82°F)
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
  • Lighting: Low to Moderate
  • Substrate: Nutrient-rich (aquarium soil or sand with root tabs)
  • CO₂: Beneficial but not required

Sold as an individual rosette. A versatile and reliable sword plant well-suited to community tanks, planted aquariums, and low-tech setups alike.
