Adult Size 3 inches (7.5 cm)
Lifespan 6 – 10 years

Appearance

The Demasoni Cichlid displays a vivid pattern of alternating electric blue and dark blue-black vertical stripes running across the entire body and fins — a bold, graphic pattern that is immediately recognizable and highly attractive. Both males and females display similar colouration, making sexing by colour alone difficult. The vivid blue-and-black striped pattern creates a dramatic, eye-catching display that stands out in any Malawi aquarium.

Water Parameters & Tank Setup

  • Temperature: 76 – 82°F (24 – 28°C)
  • pH: 7.8 – 8.5
  • General Hardness (GH): 10 – 20 dGH
  • Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons; larger is better for managing aggression
  • Substrate: Sand; large rock formations for territory and hiding
  • Decor: Dense rock formations with many caves and hiding spots

Diet & Feeding

  • Staple: High-quality cichlid pellets and spirulina-based foods
  • Treats: Frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and blanched vegetables
  • Note: Primarily herbivorous — avoid high-protein meaty foods to prevent Malawi Bloat

Feed 2–3 times daily.

Compatibility & Tank Mates

Must be kept in groups of 12 or more to spread aggression — in smaller groups, dominant males will target and kill subordinates. Best kept in a species-only tank or with other robust Mbuna. The high group number is essential for the wellbeing of all fish.

Breeding

Maternal mouthbrooders. Females incubate eggs in their mouths for 3–4 weeks.

The Demasoni Cichlid is a bold and electric Mbuna that brings vivid blue-and-black striped beauty to any Lake Malawi aquarium. A stunning but demanding species that rewards experienced aquarists with an extraordinary display.
