Black Tiger Dario (Dario sp. Tiger)

The Black Tiger Dario (Dario tigris or formerly Dario sp. 'Myanmar') is a tiny, dramatic-looking freshwater fish from Myanmar. It's prized for its striking black and orange/red vertical stripes (on males) and its perfect suitability for planted nano aquariums.

Scientific & Common Names

• Scientific Name: Dario tigris (formally described in 2015). It was previously known in the hobby as Dario sp. 'Myanmar'.

• Common Names: Black Tiger Dario, Tiger Badis, Myanmar Tiger Badis.

• Family: Badidae (related to the more common Dario dario or Scarlet Badis).

Natural Habitat

• Found in slow-moving or still waters (streams, ponds, ditches) in the Myanmar (Burma) region.

• Prefers shallow, heavily vegetated areas with leaf litter and submerged branches/roots.

• Water is typically clear.

Appearance

• Size: Very small, reaching a maximum of about 1 inch (2.5 cm).

Behavior & Tank Mates

• Temperament: Generally peaceful but territorial and shy. Males will spar with each other, but injuries are rare if given enough space and hiding spots.

• Tank Mates: Choose very carefully. Best in a species-only tank or with very peaceful, non-competitive nano species like:

  • Small, gentle shrimp (Neocaridina—but they might eat shrimplets)

  • Small, upper-water schooling fish like Ember Tetras or Chili Rasboras (can help diffuse shyness)

  • Tiny, peaceful bottom dwellers like Boraras species or Otocinclus.

• Avoid: Any fast, aggressive, or fin-nipping fish. They will be outcompeted for food and stressed.
