Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Green' is a very popular and hardy aquatic plant, highly regarded for its ease of care and attractive appearance. It is a cultivar of the species Cryptocoryne wendtii and is an excellent choice for beginners and experienced aquascapers alike .

Key Characteristics

  • Scientific NameCryptocoryne wendtii 'Green'

  • Family: Araceae

  • Origin: Sri Lanka

  • Leaf Color: Bright, vibrant green. Under different lighting or water conditions, it can sometimes show slight color variations but generally maintains its green hue .

  • Leaf Shape & Texture: Leaves are lanceolate (lance-shaped) with a slightly wavy or crinkled edge, adding visual texture . They have a distinct, visible vein pattern .

  • Plant Size: It has a compact, rosette growth form. Height is quite variable, typically reaching 10-15 cm (4-6 inches), but it can grow up to 25-30 cm (10-12 inches) depending on conditions .

  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate .

Care Requirements

This plant is famed for its adaptability. Here is a summary of its ideal care parameters:

Parameter Ideal Range / Requirement
Lighting Low to Moderate . Thrives even in shaded areas. High light may cause it to grow more horizontally .
Temperature 20-28°C (68-82°F) . It can tolerate a wider range of 15-30°C .
pH 5 - 8 (tolerates a wide range) .
Water Hardness Very adaptable; grows well in very soft to hard water .
CO₂ Not necessary . It grows well in low-tech tanks without CO2 injection, though added CO2 can boost growth .
Substrate Prefers a nutrient-rich substrate as it is a heavy root feeder .
Placement in Tank Foreground to Midground .
Propagation Runners (offsets). The mother plant sends out runners, and new plantlets can be separated once established .

Special Notes for Aquarists

  • "Crypt Melt": Like many Cryptocoryne species, it may undergo "melting" when first introduced to a new aquarium or after sudden changes in water parameters. This means the leaves will turn to mush. Do not discard the plant; the root system is likely still healthy and will regrow new, acclimated leaves in a few weeks .

  • Stability: It prefers stable water conditions. Avoid moving the plant frequently once planted .

  • Nutrients: A lack of iron can cause the leaves to turn yellow, which can be remedied with an iron-rich fertilizer . Avoid excessive iron in the substrate, as it can cause leaf drop .

  • Visual Appeal: Its bright green color and textured leaves provide an excellent contrast against darker plants like Anubias or red-stemmed plants .
