1. Basic Identity & Origin

  • Scientific Name: Cryptocoryne walkeri (often seen in the hobby as Cryptocoryne walkeri 'Lutea' or 'Tropica')

  • Family: Araceae (the Arum family)

  • Common Names: Walker's Crypt, Crypt Lutea.

  • Origin: Sri Lanka, where it grows in streams and rivers in the central and southwestern parts of the island, often in shaded conditions.

2. Morphology (Physical Description)

  • Leaves: This is a medium-sized Crypt. Its leaves are lanceolate (spear-shaped) with a distinctive bullate (blistered or puckered) texture on the upper surface. The leaf edges can be slightly wavy.

  • Color: The leaves display a beautiful color gradient. The topside is typically a deep olive green to bronzy-brown, while the underside is a striking reddish-purple or maroon. New leaves often emerge with a bright, coppery-red color.

  • Size: In an aquarium, it usually reaches a height of 10-15 cm (4-6 inches), forming a dense, low rosette. It can grow slightly larger in emergent or paludarium conditions.

  • Root System: Like all Crypts, it has a robust, rhizomatous root system.

3. Aquarium Care & Requirements

Cryptocoryne walkeri is considered one of the easier and more adaptable Cryptocoryne species, making it excellent for beginners.

  • Lighting: Low to moderate. It thrives in shaded areas and can do well even under lower light, which helps bring out its reddish undersides. High light is not necessary and may encourage algae on its slow-growing leaves.

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22-28°C (72-82°F)

    • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0 - 7.5) is ideal, but it is quite adaptable.

    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water. It is not as sensitive to dissolved minerals as some other Crypts.

  • Substrate: A nutrient-rich substrate is crucial for healthy root development and vibrant growth. Root tabs are highly recommended if using inert sand or gravel.

  • CO2 & Fertilization: CO2 injection is not required but will promote slightly faster and more robust growth. Regular dosing of a comprehensive liquid fertilizer (especially one containing iron and micronutrients) will enhance its colors and health.

  • Placement: Perfect for the mid-ground of smaller tanks or the foreground of larger aquariums. It looks excellent when planted in groups.

4. Growth & Propagation

  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate. This is typical for Cryptocorynes.

  • Propagation: Propagates vegetatively via runners (stolons) that spread horizontally under the substrate. A new plantlet will form at the end of the runner and can be separated and replanted once it has developed several leaves. This process is natural and should not be forced.
