It is a cultivar of the Cryptocoryne spiralis species, introduced to the aquarium hobby by ADA (Aqua Design Amano) and valued for its decorative tiger-stripe pattern .

 Appearance and Key Features

  • Leaf Appearance: The plant's most distinctive feature is its long, narrow, lance-shaped leaves. They are typically reddish-brown to bronze, adorned with dark, tiger-like stripes or spots. Some variations show a prominent lime-green central vein .

  • Leaf Texture: The leaf margins can be smooth to slightly wavy or undulating .

  • Size: It has a strong vertical growth habit, making it suitable for backgrounds. Leaves can grow from 20 cm up to 50 cm or more in height .

  • Growth Form: The plant grows from a rosette and propagates by forming daughter plants at the base, rather than long runners .

 Origin and Rarity

  • Geographic Origin: The species Cryptocoryne spiralis originates from India, specifically the southwestern state of Kerala .

  • Rarity: The 'Tiger' variety is considered a rare and sought-after plant, even in the European market. It was brought into the mainstream by ADA .

 Care and Maintenance

This plant is generally considered easy to moderate in difficulty, making it suitable for beginners who provide stable conditions .

Parameter Details
Difficulty Easy to Moderate
Lighting Medium to High (essential for maintaining vibrant stripes)
CO₂ Optional, but highly recommended for enhanced growth and coloration
Substrate Nutrient-rich substrate (like aquasoil) is required
Temperature 22-28°C (72-82°F)
pH 5.0 - 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)
Water Hardness Soft to moderately hard (2-15 dGH)
Growth Rate Slow to Moderate
Placement Mid-ground to Background
Propagation Runners / Division of daughter rosettes

 Special Considerations

  • Crypt Melt: Like other Cryptocoryne species, it is susceptible to "melting" (leaves dissolving) when first introduced to a new tank or during sudden changes in water parameters. This is normal; the plant usually recovers from its root system if left in place and conditions are stabilized .

  • Color and Pattern: The intensity of the red color and the tiger stripes is directly linked to lighting intensity. Higher light will yield more vibrant colors, while lower light may cause the plant to become greener and lose its distinctive pattern .
