Overview and Origin

Cryptocoryne parva is a species of freshwater aquatic plant prized in the aquarium hobby for its small size. Its name is derived from the Latin word "parva," meaning "small," which is its most defining feature .

  • Scientific Name: Cryptocoryne parva

  • Family: Araceae [citation:1, 3, 6]

  • Origin: This plant is native to the central highlands of Sri Lanka, where it grows in dense colonies along the banks of fast-flowing rivers [citation:4, 5, 6, 9].

 Physical Characteristics

This plant is distinct from other members of the Cryptocoryne genus due to its diminutive stature and consistent appearance.

  • Size: It is the smallest known Cryptocoryne species. It typically reaches a height of 3 to 10 cm (approximately 1 to 4 inches), making it an ideal foreground plant [citation:2, 5, 6, 7, 9].

  • Appearance: C. parva grows as a small rosette of narrow, bright green leaves [citation:5, 7]. Unlike many other crypts, it does not significantly change its leaf shape or color when transitioning from its emerged (emersed) to submerged form [citation:3, 9]. The leaves lack the purplish underside common in other species .

  • Growth Form: It is a rhizomatous plant that spreads very slowly via runners (stolons) [citation:1, 6, 8]. This slow, compact growth allows it to form a dense, carpet-like ground cover over time without becoming invasive [citation:3, 7].

 Aquarium Care and Requirements

While considered a hardy plant once established, C. parva has some specific preferences that differ from other crypts, primarily due to its small stature and slow growth rate.

  • Lighting: This plant requires medium to high light to thrive [citation:2, 3, 6, 9, 10]. Because it stays so small, it is easily shaded by taller plants or floating vegetation. Inadequate light will result in extremely slow growth or even leaf loss [citation:3, 9].

  • Water Parameters: It is adaptable to a wide range of water conditions.

    • Temperature: 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F) [citation:1, 3, 7].

    • pH: 5.0 to 8.0 [citation:3, 6, 7, 10].

    • Hardness: Tolerates very soft to hard water [citation:1, 6, 8].

  • Substrate: A nutrient-rich substrate is highly beneficial and will significantly improve its growth and spread [citation:1, 3, 9, 10]. Root tabs or nutrient capsules can be used to supplement the substrate .

  • CO2 Injection: While it can be grown in low-tech setups without it, supplementing with CO2 (10-30 mg/l) is highly recommended to achieve faster, healthier growth and a denser carpet [citation:3, 6, 7, 10].

  • Growth Rate: Its growth rate is famously very slow, even under optimal conditions [citation:3, 6, 8, 9]. Patience is required when cultivating this plant as a foreground carpet.

 Planting and Maintenance Tips

  • Placement: Best used in the foreground of the aquarium. Plant small clumps a few centimeters apart to allow them space to grow together over time [citation:3, 6, 9].

  • Initial Planting: It is common for Cryptocoryne species to experience "melting" (losing leaves) after being introduced to a new aquarium. Remove any dying leaves to allow new growth to emerge .

  • Propagation: It is propagated by carefully separating sections of the rhizome or runners from an established mother plant [citation:1, 6, 7, 8].

  • Maintenance: Aside from patience, the main task is pruning off any old or damaged leaves near the base to keep the plant looking tidy . Due to its slow growth, it can be prone to green spot algae on its older leaves. Ensuring good water circulation and balanced nutrients can help prevent this .
