Cryptocoryne lutea — Golden-Toned Elegance for the Planted Tank
Native to the rivers and streams of Sri Lanka, Cryptocoryne lutea is a medium-sized crypt celebrated for its warm, olive-to-golden-green foliage and subtle leaf texture. Its leaves display a gentle hammered or bullate surface that catches light beautifully, giving it a richness and depth that flat-leaved plants simply can’t match. Versatile enough for foreground or midground placement, C. lutea is a staple in Nature Aquarium and Dutch-style layouts alike.
Like all crypts, it rewards patience. Once its roots take hold in a nutrient-rich substrate, it grows steadily and spreads via runners — quietly filling in your scape with warm, golden-green rosettes that anchor the layout and complement both red and bright green plants beautifully.
Appearance
- Height: 10 – 20 cm (4 – 8 inches); suitable for foreground in larger tanks or midground in smaller ones
- Leaves: Lanceolate to ovate, olive to golden-green with a subtly textured, bullate surface
- Growth habit: Rosette form; spreads via underground runners over time
Care & Planting Tips
- Plant with the crown just above the substrate — burying it too deep will inhibit growth
- Root feeder — use root tabs or a nutrient-rich substrate for best results
- CO₂ is optional but encourages faster, more compact growth and richer coloration
- Avoid frequent replanting — crypts prefer to settle; disturbance can trigger temporary leaf melt
- New plantlets from runners can be separated and replanted once they have 3–4 leaves
Ideal Tank Parameters
- pH: 6.0 – 7.5
- Temperature: 22 – 28°C (72 – 82°F)
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
- Lighting: Low to Medium
- Substrate: Nutrient-rich (aquarium soil or sand with root tabs)
- CO₂: Not required; supplementation accelerates growth and enhances colour
Sold as an individual rosette. Appearance may vary slightly based on growth conditions. Some leaf melt may occur during acclimatization — this is completely normal and healthy new growth will follow.
