Overview & Origin
Cryptocoryne lucens (often simply called "Crypt Lucens") is a versatile and hardy aquatic plant belonging to the Araceae family. It is native to Sri Lanka, where it grows in streams and rivers, often partially submerged or in very wet, humid conditions.
It is highly regarded in the aquarium hobby for its small size, bright green color, and low maintenance requirements, making it an excellent choice for foreground or midground placement.
Key Characteristics & Appearance
-
Size: It is one of the smaller Cryptocoryne species. Mature leaves typically reach 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) in height, though they can grow slightly taller under ideal conditions.
-
Leaf Shape & Color: The leaves are lanceolate (spear-shaped), slender, and have a smooth edge. Their most distinguishing feature is their vibrant, light to medium green color, which provides a beautiful contrast to darker green or red plants in an aquascape.
-
Growth Habit: It grows in a classic "rosette" pattern, with leaves emerging from a central root crown. It spreads moderately via runners (stolons) underground, forming a dense, attractive carpet or cluster over time.
-
Root System: Like all crypts, it has a strong, extensive root system. Healthy roots are crucial for its growth and nutrient uptake.
Aquarium Care & Requirements
Cryptocoryne lucens is considered easy to moderate in difficulty and is an excellent plant for beginners, especially those new to the Cryptocoryne genus.
| Parameter | Ideal Range |
|---|---|
| Lighting | Low to Medium. It can thrive in lower light, which helps suppress algae on its leaves. In higher light, growth may be slightly more compact. |
| Temperature | 22 - 28°C (72 - 82°F) |
| pH | 6.0 - 7.5 (Quite adaptable) |
| Water Hardness | Soft to moderately hard. It is less sensitive to hardness fluctuations than some other crypts. |
| Substrate | Crucial. Requires a nutrient-rich substrate (e.g., aquarium soil, sand capped with root tabs). Its roots feed heavily from the substrate. |
| CO2 | Not required, but supplementation will promote faster, lusher growth and better coloration. |
| Fertilization | Root fertilization is key. Use root tabs. A balanced liquid fertilizer is beneficial for overall tank health but is secondary to substrate nutrients. |
Planting & Propagation
-
Planting: Plant individual rosettes with the crown (where leaves meet roots) just above the substrate surface. Do not bury the crown deeply.
-
Propagation: Propagates naturally and easily via runners. The mother plant will send out horizontal stems underground, which develop new plantlets nearby. These can be separated and replanted once they have a few leaves of their own.
