Cryptocoryne affinis "Red" is a variant of the Cryptocoryne affinis species. It is sometimes also referred to as Cryptocoryne affinis "Metallic Red" . This plant is not to be confused with the more common Cryptocoryne wendtii "Affinis Red," which is a different species altogether .

  • Appearance: Its main attraction is its foliage. When grown submerged, the leaves develop a distinctive brownish-red to copper-colored border, which contrasts with the rest of the leaf blade . The leaves are lance-shaped and may have a slightly puckered or crinkled texture .

  • Natural Habitat: This plant originates from Southeast Asia. While the species C. affinis is widespread in West Malaysia, the specific origin of the "Red" form is not precisely documented .

 Care Guide

This plant is well-regarded for being adaptable and easy to care for, making it a suitable choice for beginners, provided a few key points are kept in mind.

 Cultivation Tips

  • Substrate and Planting: Like most crypts, C. affinis "Red" is a heavy root feeder. A nutrient-rich substrate will help it thrive .

  • "Crypt Melt": Be aware that this plant is sensitive to changes in its environment. After being planted or moved, it may "melt," where the leaves die back. This is a normal reaction, and the plant should regrow from the roots once it has adjusted to its new conditions. For this reason, it's best to avoid moving it once it's established .

  • Water Stability: Maintaining stable water parameters is key to its health. Drastic fluctuations in water chemistry can trigger melting .

  • Growth Forms: While typically grown submerged in aquariums, it can also be grown emerged in very humid conditions, such as a paludarium or greenhouse .
