The Deep Water Hap male displays a beautiful iridescent blue to blue-purple body colouration with a distinctive pale blue to white lateral band running along the midline of the body — a refined, elegant pattern that is unique to this species. The iridescent blue colouration shimmers under aquarium lighting, and the pale lateral band creates a sophisticated two-toned effect. Females are more subdued in silver-grey tones with faint markings.
