Appearance

Anubias barteri var. barteri displays broad, oval to heart-shaped leaves in a rich, deep green with a thick, leathery texture and prominent veining. The robust rhizome creeps along surfaces, anchoring the plant to driftwood or rocks. As the plant matures, it develops into a lush, full specimen with multiple leaves that create a dense, jungle-like presence in the aquarium. It occasionally produces white, calla lily-like flowers even when fully submerged.

Planting & Placement

Never bury the rhizome in substrate — attach to driftwood or rocks using fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe glue. Best placed in the midground to background of medium to large aquariums where its impressive size and lush growth can be fully appreciated.

Compatibility

Compatible with all freshwater fish and invertebrates. Thick, leathery leaves resist even the most determined herbivorous fish. Algae can develop on older leaves — Otocinclus, Amano shrimp, and Nerite snails are excellent companions for algae control.

Propagation

Divide the rhizome with a clean, sharp blade, ensuring each section has at least 2–3 leaves. Attach new sections to driftwood or rock and allow to establish. New leaves emerge slowly but steadily from the growing tip.
