Appearance
The Red Aponogeton displays long, strap-like leaves in warm reddish to burgundy tones, often with a slightly ruffled or undulating margin. The warm red colouration is most intense in new leaves and under good lighting, creating a beautiful contrast with the predominantly green plants in a typical aquascape. The leaves sway gracefully in the current, adding a sense of natural movement and warmth to the aquarium.
Water Parameters & Care
- Temperature: 68 – 82°F (20 – 28°C)
- pH: 6.0 – 7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 2 – 15 dGH
- Lighting: Moderate to bright — good lighting enhances and maintains the red colouration
- CO₂: Beneficial but not essential
- Fertiliser: Root tabs near the bulb; liquid fertiliser with iron and micronutrients helps maintain red colouration
- Rest period: May go dormant periodically — allow the bulb to rest before new growth emerges
Planting & Placement
Plant the bulb in a nutrient-rich substrate, leaving the top half of the bulb exposed above the substrate surface. Best placed in the midground to background where its warm red leaves create a beautiful colour contrast with surrounding green plants.
Compatibility
Compatible with most freshwater fish and invertebrates. Avoid herbivorous fish that may damage the leaves.
Propagation
Propagates by producing daughter bulbs from the main bulb. Separate daughter bulbs carefully and replant.
The Red Aponogeton is a warm and beautiful plant that brings flowing red colour and graceful movement to any aquascape. Easy to grow, visually striking, and always rewarding — a wonderful choice for aquarists seeking warm colour in their planted tank.
