Sleek, elegant, and wonderfully distinctive — Anubias barteri var. glabra, commonly known as the Lanceolata Anubias, is a graceful variety of Anubias barteri distinguished by its long, narrow, lance-shaped leaves. More slender and flowing than the broad-leaved standard barteri, this variety brings a fine, elegant texture and a natural, flowing quality to any aquascape.

Appearance

Anubias barteri var. glabra displays long, narrow, lance-shaped leaves that taper to a point, giving the plant a sleek, flowing silhouette quite different from the broad oval leaves of standard barteri. The leaves are a rich, deep green with a smooth, glossy surface and prominent veining. The more slender leaf shape creates a fine texture that contrasts beautifully with broader-leaved plants and adds a natural, flowing quality to the aquascape.

Water Parameters & Care

  • Temperature: 72 – 82°F (22 – 28°C)
  • pH: 6.0 – 8.0
  • General Hardness (GH): 3 – 20 dGH
  • Lighting: Low to moderate — extremely shade-tolerant
  • CO₂: Not required
  • Fertiliser: Benefits from occasional liquid fertiliser

Planting & Placement

Never bury the rhizome in substrate — attach to driftwood or rocks using fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe glue. Its slender, flowing leaves make it ideal for midground to background placement, where it adds fine texture and natural elegance to the aquascape.

Compatibility

Compatible with all freshwater fish and invertebrates. Thick leaves resist most herbivorous fish. Algae can develop on older leaves — Otocinclus, Amano shrimp, and Nerite snails are excellent companions for algae control.

Propagation

Divide the rhizome with a clean, sharp blade, ensuring each section has at least 2–3 leaves. Attach new sections to driftwood or rock and allow to establish.

Anubias barteri var. glabra is a graceful and low-maintenance plant that brings fine texture and flowing elegance to any aquascape. Hardy, adaptable, and virtually indestructible — a wonderful choice for aquarists of all experience levels.
