Clown Loach — The Playful Icon of the Tropical Aquarium

Bold, social, and bursting with personality, the Clown Loach (Botia macracantha) is one of the most iconic and beloved fish in the freshwater hobby. Its vivid orange body banded with deep black stripes makes it an instant focal point in any aquarium — and its quirky, entertaining behaviour keeps hobbyists captivated for years.

Clown Loaches are known for their playful antics: resting on their sides (perfectly normal!), chasing tank mates in a game of tag, and clicking audibly when excited. Once settled into a well-maintained tank, they become the undeniable stars of the show.

Tank & Setup Tips

Clown Loaches are schooling fish and must be kept in groups of 5 or more to thrive — solitary individuals become stressed and reclusive. They need a spacious tank (75+ gallons for a proper group) with plenty of hiding spots: caves, driftwood, PVC pipes, and dense planting all work well. Use a soft sand or smooth gravel substrate to protect their sensitive underbellies and delicate sub-orbital spines.

They are sensitive to poor water quality, so a powerful filtration system and consistent water changes are essential. Keep the tank well-covered — Clown Loaches are known jumpers!

Feeding

Omnivorous and enthusiastic eaters. Feed a varied diet of sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables. They are excellent natural snail hunters — a great bonus for tanks with pest snail problems.

Compatible Tank Mates

Peaceful with most community fish. Ideal tank mates include larger tetras, barbs, rainbowfish, gouramis, and other loach species. Avoid very small fish that may be intimidated, and steer clear of aggressive cichlids.
