The Black Galaxy Pinto is a stunning and highly sought-after freshwater shrimp, known for its intricate black and white patterns that resemble a starry night sky. It is considered a "high-grade" or "high-breeding" shrimp, meaning it's a selectively bred variety that requires more care than common shrimp species.

Here are the key details about the Black Galaxy Pinto.

Common Name Black Galaxy Pinto
Scientific Name Caridina cf. cantonensis (a hybrid variant)
Origin A cultivated form from Taiwan and Southeast Asia
Adult Size Approximately 1 - 1.5 inches (2 - 3.5 cm)
Lifespan 1.5 - 2 years
Difficulty Advanced / Professional
Temperament Peaceful, social

 Appearance and Patterns

The Black Galaxy Pinto's value lies in its unique and variable patterns. They are hybrids, originally bred from a mix of different species like Bee Shrimp (Caridina logemanni), Tiger Shrimp (Caridina mariae), and other Caridina cantonensis variants. This complex lineage results in the stunning patterns we see today.

  • Coloration: The base color is a deep, lacquer black. This is contrasted by bright white markings.

  • Patterns: The "Galaxy" pattern refers to fine white speckles on the body, particularly the head (carapace), which look like stars in a galaxy. The "Pinto" pattern is a broader, pied or spotted white pattern. Higher-grade shrimp often feature a distinct white dorsal stripe down the back, sometimes with horizontal stripes (a "Fishbone" pattern).

  • Grading: The value is determined by the pattern. Generally, the more white coverage, the higher the grade and price. Lower grades have less white, while high grades have extensive white patterns and can be very expensive ($50 - $400).

 Water Parameters and Tank Setup

These shrimp require very specific and stable water conditions. They are not suitable for beginners or for tap water in most cases. Re-mineralized reverse osmosis (RO) water is typically recommended.

  • Temperature: 68 - 78°F (20 - 26°C)

  • pH: 5.5 - 7.0 (ideally slightly acidic)

  • General Hardness (GH): 3 - 7

  • Carbonate Hardness (KH): 0 - 1 (very soft water is essential)

  • Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): 80 - 150 ppm

  • Tank Size: Minimum 5-10 gallons for a colony, or as small as 20 liters for a small group.

  • Substrate: An active buffering substrate (like ADA Amazonia) is crucial. It helps lower and stabilize pH and KH.

  • Filtration: A gentle, shrimp-safe filter like a sponge filter is ideal to avoid sucking up baby shrimp.

  • Plants and Decor: A well-planted tank with moss, driftwood, and Indian Almond Leaves provides hiding places and, more importantly, grows biofilm, which is their primary food source.

 Diet and Feeding

Black Galaxy Pintos are omnivores that graze continuously. Their diet should consist of:

  • Primary Food: Biofilm and algae growing naturally in a mature aquarium.

  • Supplemental Food: High-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables (like zucchini or spinach), and protein-rich foods like daphnia or specialized protein feed once or twice a week.

  • Leaf Litter: Dried leaves like mulberry, almond, or walnut leaves are excellent, as they break down and provide a continuous food source.

 Breeding and Behavior

  • Breeding: They can breed in freshwater aquariums under stable, optimal conditions. The female carries the eggs for about 4-6 weeks before hatching 10-30 fully-formed tiny shrimp. However, due to their complex hybrid genetics, the offspring will likely have varying patterns and grades, not always replicating the parents' high-quality look.

  • Behavior: They are peaceful and social animals that do best in groups. They should not be kept with large or aggressive fish.

  • Tank Mates: Can be kept with other peaceful, soft-water Caridina shrimp like Crystal Reds or Blue Bolts. Avoid mixing with Neocaridina (like Cherry Shrimp) as their water parameter needs differ.

To summarize, the Black Galaxy Pinto is a stunning but demanding shrimp. Their breathtaking appearance is a reward for the specialized care they require, making them a prized possession for dedicated shrimp keepers.
